There are a number of short films that I really enjoy, the majority being animated films, but there's really only been one live action short film that touched me on a personal level. A short film that I saw around the time it was published that still stays in my head, and that is Mikel Dever's Military 18 Alcohol 21. It's a very meta and personal film about a college student struggling with anxiety over sharing art (in this case, film). I may not be a film student, but I've felt that struggle and anxious feeling of sharing what is essentially a part of you for the world to see (or at least, something your mentor and peers will see). It's nerve-wracking, and you kind of don't want to do it, yet it's still something we want to do in order to feel like we've left our mark as an artist. What we make could very well be what we are remembered for. Mikel has made some student films since the publication of this short film, but I'll always remember bursting into tears by the end of this film, and feeling like I'm not alone with these fears.
The film appears to be one long shot, which makes the film all the more up-close, personal, and even uncomfortable. It's raw, and it's very effective in what it does. If you don't think you can sit through it all the way, I implore you to keep the window of your browser up while working on something simultaneous. At least continue listening to the film if you can't watch it all the way, it truly is something worth your time.
